Chris Castle - Photographer

This website is all about photographs and I hope they’ll speak for themselves - but I’ll begin with a few words about me and my time as a photographer.

I’ve been taking photographs seriously for nearly 30 years, largely self-taught with the aid of as many books and magazines as I could lay my hands on - and many ‘words of wisdom’ from various helpful souls. I eventually specialised in flowers simply because I love them - I had finally bought a Tamron 90mm macro lens and after trying it out in the garden I was hooked! I’m passionate about colour, shape and texture and love trying to record the beautiful aspects of the world around me (especially in close-up) - and then sharing the results.

Chris Castle Photographer I’ve had many different cameras through the years (latterly, mostly Nikons) and currently have a Fuji S2 pro and a Nikon D300. As for lenses I generally use a mid-range zoom (Nikon 24-70) and my trusty Tamron macro. I’ve tried various extra bits of kit, some more outlandish than others, but have finally learnt with age that, for me, it’s best to keep it as simple as possible - a carbon fibre tripod with a good sturdy ball head, a couple of reflectors and of course Photoshop for making the most of what I’ve taken!

I began selling my photos some years ago, and achieved Associateship of the Disabled Photographers Society. I’ve been fortunate in winning several awards, including runner-up in the ‘My Favourite Plant or Flower’ category of the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society‘s Photographic Competition. I was also awarded a silver medal by the RHS for an exhibit of my close-up floral photos at the October 2005 London Flower Show. My pictures have been used in interior design, including twelve 3’ x 2’ panels in a commercial children’s nursery, and also by publishers in magazines, books and greetings cards etc.

I hope to be frequently updating the different galleries, adding new pictures as I take them - which, as anyone who knows me would tell you, is as often as possible! They are mostly taken around my home area in Southern England - a great many in my own back garden.
